Sorrow and the Virtues - A Summa Reading Group

Join Prof. Thomas Hibbs (Baylor University) and other students to discuss sorrow and the virtues in the Summa Theologiae. The group will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Feb. 7 and Mar. 2 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.

To be eligible, applicants must be current university students at the undergraduate or graduate level. Young professional applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Description:

For Thomas Aquinas, the passion of sorrow is at the root of envy, sloth, and mercy. In the seminar we will first read Aquinas’ analysis of the passions of the soul, particularly sorrow. Then we will examine sorrow’s role in virtue and vice. We will also consider the remedies of sorrow, particularly in the forms of friendship and contemplation of the truth.

Who can apply? Current undergraduate and graduate students. Young professional applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Space is limited. These reading groups are intentionally small. If you are admitted, please be diligent in attending. Additionally, if you are not admitted to this group, we encourage you to apply to other groups later in the semester.
