Morality of the Passions - A Summa Reading Group

Join Prof. Matthew Dugandzic (St. Mary's Seminary & University) and other students to discuss the morality of the passions as presented in the Summa Theologiae. The group will meet on Tuesdays and Fridays between March 7 and 31 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.

To be eligible, applicants must be current university students at the undergraduate or graduate level. Young professional applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Description:

This course examines the morality of the passions (emotions) according to the anthropological, psychological, ethical, and theological views of Thomas Aquinas. Important questions to be discussed include whether the passions are good or evil in general, whether they are good or evil in particular, and how evil or unwanted passions can be changed or eliminated. In addition, the class will also discuss on contemporary questions in psychology regarding therapeutic approaches to emotion regulation and contemporary theological questions about Christ's emotional experiences. The ultimate goal of the course will be to see how human passions fit into the virtuous life as Aquinas understands it.
