Join Prof. Thomas Hibbs (Baylor University) and other students to discuss Aquinas on the theological virtue of hope as presented in the Summa Theologiae. The group will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between October 3 and October 25 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.
Description:
The course will focus on a careful reading of the questions on hope in the secunda pars of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae. We will begin, however, by examining what Aquinas has to say about the nature and types of sorrow, one species of which is acedia or sloth, which is at the root of the vice of despair, which is opposed to hope. The course will be conducted as a seminar discussion, with only occasional mini-lectures.

Class 1: ST I-II,Q35,A8 on the species of sorrow; ST II-II,Q20,A1-4 Despair
Class 2: STII-II,Q21,A1-4 on presumption
