Description: Dante Alighieri is widely considered the greatest and most influential of Christian poets. He pioneered and inspired the sweet new style, changed the trajectory of renaissance art, and produced what is arguably the greatest poem ever. But is this all to be chalked up as an aesthetic feat? Had he merely a perceptive eye and a rich imagination or was his genius also animated by faith?
Many have suggested that Dante’s keen poetic vision is in part the fruit of a wise theological vision. What is more, it seems clear that his theological vision is indebted to St. Thomas Aquinas. During this weekend, we will inquire into Dante’s genius as an artist formed in the Catholic intellectual tradition, as one steeped in Scripture, the Fathers, and especially in the thought of the Angelic Doctor. Join us for a weekend retreat as we explore the Thomistic patrimony in what is perhaps its most beautiful manifestation.
The retreat will have seminars and discussions framed by the traditional elements of a retreat (Mass, adoration, Divine Office, etc.). This event is primarily for the leaders of Thomistic Institute student chapters, but is open to other students and young adults who express interest. The retreat is free of charge.
