Catholicism and the Arts: An Intellectual Retreat

  • The Christian Heritage Centre at Stonyhurst Clitheroe, England, BB7 9PZ United Kingdom (map)

The Christian Heritage Centre at Stonyhurst | Clitheroe, UK

The arts have always offered Catholics a means of creative expression for our faith, our theology, our sufferings and our longing for God. The beauty of the Church’s artistic heritage provides a continual inspiration, not only to artists today, but to our own life of prayer, pointing us towards the goodness and truth of Christ and his sacraments. We will learn about the place of the arts in Catholicism and reflect on the role of art, architecture, music and literature in leading us into a deeper appreciation of the Divine Beauty of God.

The retreat will have seminars and discussions framed by the traditional liturgical elements of a retreat including Mass, adoration, and the praying of the Divine Office. Fr. Toby Lees, O.P. will serve as chaplain. This retreat is organized by the TI chapters at the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh but is open to applicants from universities across the UK and Ireland.
